Robert Robinson biography

Robert Robinson is invested in bringing the traditions of classical ballet to the most modern ways of creating and experiencing movement. He believes the future of dance lies in contemporary gesture, the enrichment of the art by innovative technology and accompaniment by the most superior achievements in new music. This must always be supported by the deepest respect and understanding of the discipline's history and purpose as a cultural mirror. On June 11, 2008 he premiered his first evening length work, a rendition of the original entitled "Giselle: Abstracted", with a score by Ditch contributor Jeanann Seidman, at the Access Theater. He was honored to be the first non-instrumental performer to compete within Concert Artist Guild in the fall of 2007 at Symphony Space. His work for Ditch began in 2004 with their inaugural performance and has also been seen in such New York City venues as the Bowery Poetry Club, the Puffin Room, and BRIC. Since 2005, he has been a full time company member of Rioult with whom he has performed at The Skirball Theater, The Joyce Theatre, and City Center Theatre alongside touring North America and Europe. He graduated from The Juilliard School under the direction of Lawerance Rhodes where he was afforded such opportunities as working with Dwight Rhoden on the creation of a new piece and learning the repertory of Lar Lubovitch. In addition his student-works were performed in The Juilliard Theater, The Clark Studio Theater and Alice Tully Hall. During his senior year he was the subject of a documentary reality series entitled Dance School: Juilliard which aired on PBS in the fall of 2008. Previously, he trained at the Hartt School under the direction of Peggy Lyman. As a guest artist he has performed with Lydia Johnson Dance, Ben Munisteri Dance Projects, Thang Dao Dance Company, and Minnesota Dance Theatre. As a teacher he has taught novice to professional dancers across the United States as well as served as part of Rioult's DanceReach; a state sponsored educational program for New York City's public school youth.

Reviews:

"Mr. Robinson’s notable physicality does not overpower his sense of purpose and commitment to Rioult’s choreography. His command of the stage and his utter joy of dance are constant throughout the night. "

"She is partnered by an enigmatic dark-haired and dark-eyed young man named Robert Robinson. The bearded dancer immediately swept Jessica into a spacious lift, his strength as a partner surprising in view of his slender frame. Beyond that he showed elegant port de bras and a presence with an intriguing touch of mystery."
